About the working principle of the flame arrester:
One of the necessary conditions for combustion is to reach a certain temperature, that is, the ignition point. Below the ignition point, combustion will stop. According to this principle, as long as the temperature of the burning substance is lowered below its ignition point, the flame can be prevented from spreading. When the flame passes through the many small channels of the flame arresting element, it will become several small flames. When designing the flame arresting element inside the flame arrester, the contact area between the small flame and the channel wall should be enlarged as much as possible, and the heat transfer should be enhanced to reduce the flame temperature below the ignition point, thereby preventing the flame from spreading.
Combustion and explosion are not direct intermolecular reactions, but are stimulated by external energy, molecular bonds are broken, and activated molecules are generated.The activated molecules are split into short-lived but very active free radicals, which collide with other molecules. It will generate new products and also generate new free radicals to continue to react with other molecules. When the combustible gas passes through the narrow passage of the flame arresting element, the probability of collision of free radicals with the channel wall increases, and the free radicals participating in the reaction decrease. When the passage of the flame arrester is narrow to a certain extent, the collision of free radicals with the channel wall dominates. Due to the sharp decrease in the number of free radicals, the reaction cannot continue, that is, the combustion reaction cannot continue to propagate through the flame arrester.
As the size of the flame arrester channel decreases, the probability of collisions between free radicals and reactive molecules decreases, while the probability of collisions between free radicals and channel walls increases, which promotes a reduction in free radical reactions. When the channel size is reduced to a certain value, this wall effect creates a condition that the flame cannot continue to propagate, and the flame is stopped. Therefore, the wall effect is the main mechanism for preventing flames.
